Summary of Massachusetts Graduated Licensing Law

Massachusetts requires that all drivers under the age of 18 take a local driver education course either through the public school system, if offered, or through an available commercial driving school. At this time there is NO provision for a Parent taught course. Teen drivers may apply for a permit at the age of 16, with the approval of a parent or legal guardian. Driver Ed in a Box® gives you the tools to work with your teen during the Permit stage. Our course will guide you past the handling skills learned in traditional driver education, giving you the tools you need to teach the skills your teen driver needs to become a safe, collision-free driver. Driver Ed in a Box® will help your teen build the habits of safe, collision-free driving. Driver Ed in a Box® creates habits that are proven to be effective.

Learner’s Permit (at least age 16) We recommend our Driver Ed in a Box® to use during the Learner stage. Shows the parent how to teach collision-free driving habits and provides unique teaching tools (mirrors, checklists, videos, audio instruction series, etc.). Junior Operator’s License (16 ½ -17) Driver’s License (age 18)
Teens want to know how to stay out of collisions!
Today’s teens do not just want their license; they want to be good collision-free drivers. They know the risks. Virtually all have friends who got a license and were involved in a collision in the first four weeks. Most teens have lost classmates due to fatal collisions.
Driver Ed in a Box®			Certificate of Completion!
Our product now includes both the Interactive CD-Rom Version and the Textbook Version for one low price. You may use either version to complete the course at your own pace.
*Teens want to know "why"* the things you ask them to do will work.			When you complete the full course you get a Certificate of Completion. Take this to your insurance agent. It varies state by state and by insurance company, but you may receive an insurance discount.
Using the full course your teen will learn why each step is important while learning the collision-free HABITS that make you a better driver. The full course also includes a section on Social & Consumer Issues. This includes how alcohol and drugs as well as emotions and attitude affect driving performance. Also covered are vehicle ownership (buying, leasing, insuring, and maintaining).

Learner’s Permit	Junior Operator’s License (JOL)	Driver’s License
Age 16	Age 16 ½ - 17	Age 18
Permit Restrictions Must be accompanied by operator who occupies passenger seat next to you, is at least 21 years old, holds a valid driver’s license from Massachusetts or another state, and has at least 1 year driving experience. If you are under 18, parental consent required. You may not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is a validly licensed operator with at least 1 year of driving experience. Before JOL Hold Permit at least 6 months. Maintain a clean driving record at least 6 consecutive months. Complete approved driver education & training program (30 hours classroom; 6 hours behind-the-wheel training; & and 6 hours of in-car observing another student driver. Complete at least 12 hours supervised, behind-the-wheel driving provided by a parent or guardian	You may not operate a motor vehicle between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by your parent or your legal guardian. First 6 Months While any passenger under age 18 is in the vehicle (other than you or an immediate family member of any age) must be accompanied by person at least 21 years old, who has at least 1 year of driving experience, holds a valid driver's license from Massachusetts or another state, and is occupying a seat beside you. Before Driver’s License Must have driver’s education certificate. You must also have an additional 12 hours of driving with a parent or guardian.	Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Class D permit or have completed JOL requirements.
